Now that people are more health-conscious, most would not even consider eating a food that did not have the nutritional information available. This video talks about reading a nutritional label – deciphering what is important so that you can make good food choices for you and your family.

The first thing discussed is serving size. Portions in the U.S. are pretty large. When you look at the label, you’ll want to note the serving size. That information might not always be terribly helpful, unless you’re really good at measuring exactly one ounce of something into your hand. So, look at how many servings are in the container. If there are two servings in the container, you know you can eat half of what is in the container and you’ll be getting one serving size.

That’s great for when you’re eating something, but when you’re shopping it is even more important to look at serving size and the amount of servings per container. You might buy something that you think has good nutritional value, only to find out that the container actually hold twelve servings of something and that each tiny serving is simply “not too bad for you” but to eat enough to satisfy your hunger would be actually very unhealthy.

The next thing discussed is the way the label is broken down. The most important thing to look at is serving size/amount of servings, but the calorie count is important as well. It’s also very important to look at the fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol content. Too much saturated fat and cholesterol is unhealthy for everyone, even little children. It is important to start good eating habits early.

It’s also important to pay attention to how many grams of carbohydrates are in the food. This is especially important for diabetics, as the carbohydrate count will inform how the food is processed in the body and how much sugar and insulin are produced.

Sodium is also something to look at. Many, many foods have simply too much sodium. The average person is only supposed to have a certain amount of each category on the nutrition label per day. The average daily percentage is based on a 2000 calorie diet. No matter how many total calories you plan to consume per day, you’ll want the fat and sodium percentages of the total to be low, and for the vitamin and mineral content to be high.

If you are eating in a restaurant, use your best common sense to stay away from foods that are bad for you. Stay away from smoked or cured meats – they have more sodium. Stay away from cream or cheese-based sauces and dressings – they have more fat. Choose fresh vegetables and fruits, and lean protein like fish or chicken.

As I learned the first week I had my dog, Jake, it is really hard to keep a dog in the house. Just leave your gym bag on the floor, and the next thing you know you’re dropping $60 on a phone consult with the Animal Poison Control to find out if the fact that he just ingested a half a travel deodorant is going to kill him. As it turns out, it didn’t, and it also turned out that Jake liked being outside better than inside. It doesn’t always work out like that, and if you plan for your pet to be a pampered pooch or kitty, you’d probably better watch this video.

Not only should you avoid letting your pets have access to things that are poisonous to them, you should also be educated about things you might not know are bad for your dog. For instance, you shouldn’t give real animal bones to your dog. They can splinter and catch in your dog’s throat. Also, be careful with chew toys – they can get lodged in your dog’s throat.

Chocolate is also a no-no. So is baby excrement, as it turns out. Also make sure you keep your weasel, ferret, cat, baby, etc out of the toilet – they could drown. Get one of those toilet locks, ala Baby Mama.

They say most of it is common sense. Since they never really addressed the chocolate issue, I looked online and found that you should avoid feeding your dog these common people foods:

Grapes and Raisins: These can be toxic, even fatal to dogs by causing damage to the kidneys. Don’t feed them to your dogs.

Onions: These can cause anemia in dogs, and be very harmful. So can garlic and chives.

Chocolate: All chocolate can hurt the heart, lungs, kidney, and nervous system of the dog.

Caffeine: Similar to chocolate, this stuff is a big no-no.

She starts off this video talking about the term “natural.” A lot of different food manufacturers can slap the word “natural” on their product, but how do you know if it really is? The FDA and USDA have no rules around the term right now, and some companies don’t have a marketing conscience, so they’ll tell you it is natural when it really isn’t.

Natural SHOULD mean that the product has no added flavors, colors, or synthetic substances in them. Some products do not have these things, but are labeled “natural” rather than “organic” because in order for something to be called organic it must follow certain very strict guidelines to be called as such. The USDA DOES have rules about the term “organic.”

Even when something IS “natural” it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s good for you. It is important to read the ingredients to make sure there is nothing in the product that can hurt you.

You have to make some judgment calls yourself, as well. For instance, chicken can be labeled as “all natural” even if the meat has been injected with salt water for freshness and juiciness. Salt water is, in fact, all natural, but the fact that it is added to the chicken during processing makes some people uncomfortable. It’s up to you to decide whether that is OK with you or not.

As with anything, you have to use common sense and be educated as to the things that are good for you, and the things that are not so good for you.

If you’re not an avid wine drinker, buying wine can be sort of intimidating. There are so many different types, and blends, and vintages, and wineries, that it’s hard to know for sure WHAT you’re buying, much less whether or not you’ll like it. You can always read wine reviews, but when you’re standing in the grocery store or wine shop it’s hard to pull out the old iPhone and google. And, if you don’t have an iPhone or similar, you have to just depend on the wine label.

Again, reading wine labels can be tricky. That’s why Behind the Burner traveled to Freemark Abbey Winery in Napa Valley to tell us how to decipher the information on a wine label.

First step – decide what you want. Are you looking for a wine from a particular region? From a particular winery? Or are you seeking a particular varietal (grape)? The name of the wine – Cabernet, Vioigner, etc. indicates the type of grape used in the wine. Not all wines are 100% a certain type of grape – in fact, a wine only has to have 75% of one type of grape in it to put that varietal name on the label.

The year refers to the year the wine is grown. As for alcohol content, the vintner interviewed says that his reds are about 14% alcohol, while the whites are 13% to 13.5%. If there is too high of an alcohol content, the wine will taste funny. Some can pull it off, but with food it is better to go with a lower alcohol wine. A more acidic, fruitier wine is better.

The bottom line is that it is good to have a little bit of education under your belt before you go to buy wine. You have to find out what you like before you can be sure to buy something that works for you. This means you’ll have to do some wine tasting. It’s a tough job, but you owe it to yourself!

How many times has someone snapped a digital photo of you, you’ve asked to see it, and you’ve immediately erased it because EW! That’s not what you look like! Why are your eyes red? Why do you have a double chin? Do you have a double chin for real? Crap! Where did that come from? Is your skin really that color? Why did nobody tell you you had a zit there? Sheesh, people! What is going on?

Or is it just me? Nope. It has happened to everybody. We’ve all had not-so-great photos taken of us. So, how to we get some good photos? This video will tell you how, but it supposes that someone is willing to take pictures of you. I don’t know about you, but I’m not exactly flush enough to pay someone to take my picture, nor am I gutsy and vain enough to ask someone to take a series of pictures of me. And, I’m one of those people who takes TONS of pictures of everyone else, and nobody ever says, “Hey, let me take a picture of you.” So there are tons of times in my life where there are pictures of everybody else, all the dogs, the trees, and some bugs, but no pictures of me.

Your options are to either find someone to take some decent pictures of you to prove to yourself in 30 years that you really did look like this, or you can use the tips they give you on this video to make sure you do what you can to look good in a picture someone might randomly take. Because if I’m there, I’ll probably take a picture of you.

Leigh tells us that the room she’s transforming falls in three areas of the Bagua, but if you ‘re like me and don’t know what a Bagua is you’re already confused and it’s not even a minute into the video. So, for those Feng Shui newbies, bagua refers to the cardinal directions as established in the Turtle Calendar in the time of Yao. Huh? In a nutshell, everything is divided into sections according to Feng Shui. Where things fall within these predetermined sections, or trigrams, determines the energy of the room. The directions are marked by Four Celestial Animals – the Dark Turtle for the North, the Red Phoenix for the South, the Green Dragon for the East, and the White Tiger for the West. Modern practitioners take this a step further, and divide a house into sections related to the ancient bagua.

The current bagua’s categories are travel, journey, wisdom, creative, health, ancestors, relations, fame, and wealth. In Leo and Denise’s apartment, the room they are focusing on contains the wealth, fame, and relationship baguas. Their wealth area was all cluttered up, and Leigh tells Denise that all that stuff has to go. You’re supposed to have wood in the wealth section, and Leo and Denise’s furniture created a triangle, which means fire. Fire burns wood, so no good at all.

Leigh takes Denise through the rest of the room and helps her decide what to do. Leigh is so well-spoken and self-assured, that I wish Denise would post a follow-up video talking about how this feng shui fixed everything. Here’s hoping.

First, it’s important to create a space that you like to be in. If you share your home office space with another member of your household, it’s important to minimize clutter (well, it’s always important to minimize clutter) and make a good compromise as to what fills (and doesn’t fill) your shared space.

It’s also important to introduce a little color to your room. It’s easy to do that with smaller, less expensive pieces like office supplies or trash cans, and you’re not married to that color if you feel the need for a change. Speaking of trash cans, make sure you have ones that are big enough, and that you have a separate one for recycling. A good home office is an eco-friendly home office.

Organizational tools are key – clipboards, binders, filing folders, and a corkboard or dry erase board all add some organization to your space.

It’s also important to make sure you have comfortable seating. Your office chair should be high-quality and ergonomic – you spend a lot of time sitting in it and you don’t want to take time away from your work to run to the chiropractor every little bit because you’re sitting in a chair that hurts your back.

Last of all, but certainly not least, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got adequate lighting in your home office. Computer screens can wreak havoc on your eyes, causing eyestrain and headaches galore. You’ll want to make sure you’ve got good lighting to minimize these productivity-diminishing ailments.

Creating a good home office is one of the most important home improvement projects you can undertake. The more functional, the more you can work, and them more work you do, the better you can afford the nice things, like tropical vacations and relaxing time with your family.
