How to Scientifically Achieve Enlightenment

Posted on 27. Jul, 2010 by How To in All How To Videos, Feature, Spirituality

These days, people are looking for answers.  Not only to the financial problems that burden them, but for the spiritual ones, as well.  They are seeking holistic medicine, alternative medicine, and herbal therapies.  They’re going to the chiropractor, the acupuncturist, the colon hydro therapist.  They’re reading books, attending workshops, and watching videos online.

You might not know it, but YouTube is a fertile forest of spiritual videos designed to give you, the average human, a better chance at reaching enlightenment on a spiritual level.  Some of the advice is really good.  Some of it is based in scientific study, religious study, or spiritual studies.  Some of it is pure codswallop.  Also, I’m not clear on how effective these videos are, if the comments on them are any indication:

“sounds like your view of buddhism is THORZINE flavored”

“If only we fly!  Limp Bizkit Style!”

“imagine a pen, it can’t right by it self, it need something to be useful, if you take it ad right your name you will express your self thrugh the pen, but do not forget, that you are not the pen.”

Obviously, finding enlightenment online does not lead to proper use of compound words and/or grammar.

But seriously, this is a very nice, well-thought-out video put together by a 33-year-old Canadian who briefly experienced enlightenment at the age of 26.  Because he did not understand the nature of his experience, his enlightenment was fleeting.  He plunged into studying Buddhist and spiritualist texts to understand the true meaning of enlightenment, and now he creates YouTube videos trying to share these discoveries with others.

I don’t mean to imply that all he gets by way of comments is ridicule. His videos actually have some of the most intelligent conversations I’ve seen on YouTube, they’re just peppered with inanity.  It’s the internet.  It’s all peppered with inanity.

This video talks about the functioning human body – how the heart beats, the lungs breathe, the brain associates, all without the benefit of our consciousness.  That’s because “we” are separate from our minds.  Our minds are not who “we” are.  “We” exist in the objective knowing, the consciousness that “we” “are” and will continue to be.

The video is basically a power point presentation with some really nice music behind it, but it is full of good information, if you’re into that kind of thing.  One thing that bugs me about jsab0 is that he doesn’t site his sources on the power point, so you have to take it all with a grain of salt.  Though some people, even if given source material to read, would be a little bit skeptical.

It is helpful, however, to have a different perspective.  To take a look at the body’s functions and automatic responses and to learn about a school of thought that separates the spiritual self from the physical self – that is a perspective that touches on the tenets of every major religion.  So, hopefully, even someone with a strictly orthodox background would take a look at this video in order to see what someone who has thought a lot about the subject has to say.  Passion is a highly compelling attractor when it comes to online content, as long as it’s not passion in a creepy way.

“The spiritual path involves questioning society’s beliefs and practices, and especially the validity of the workings of your own mind.” - jsab0 himself.
