Not only should you avoid letting your pets have access to things that are poisonous to them, you should also be educated about things you might not know are bad for your dog.  For instance, you shouldn’t give real animal bones to your dog.  They can splinter and catch in your dog’s throat.  Also, be careful with chew toys – they can get lodged in your dog’s throat.

Chocolate is also a no-no.  So is baby excrement, as it turns out.  Also make sure you keep your weasel, ferret, cat, baby, etc out of the toilet – they could drown.  Get one of those toilet locks, ala Baby Mama.

They say most of it is common sense.  Since they never really addressed the chocolate issue, I looked online and found that you should avoid feeding your dog these common people foods:

Grapes and Raisins:  These can be toxic, even fatal to dogs by causing damage to the kidneys.  Don’t feed them to your dogs.

Onions:  These can cause anemia in dogs, and be very harmful.  So can garlic and chives.

Chocolate:  All chocolate can hurt the heart, lungs, kidney, and nervous system of the dog.

Caffeine:  Similar to chocolate, this stuff is a big no-no.

Kari Harendorf also talks about how to raise a healthy dog in terms of how you treat yourself.  Since every creature’s health lies in the immune system, she talks about immune health for your dog.  She states that the immune system starts in the gut – if you’re putting bad foods in your stomach, your immune system isn’t functioning properly.  The same rule goes for your furry friend.  The food and dog treats you give your pet can have a great impact on whether that pet is healthy or not.

In addition to the pet’s digestive health, you can improve your dog’s mind, body, and spirit with doga – yoga for your and your dog.  While you’re not going to get Fido to do a “downward dog” you can perform certain yoga poses that incorporate man’s best friend.  Check out the video to learn more.

The pet store owner talks about pet toys that are made from renewable resources like hemp, and he shows the video host a bunch of dog toys that are made from recycled materials, like fire hoses, soda bottles, etc.  He also has a dog toy in stock that is recyclable itself.

In addition to talking about what is good for the environment in regards to these toys, the pet store owner also talks about how an organic toy can benefit your pet.

The basics – don’t put your newborn baby on the floor in front of your dog when he’s doing his special “Ohgoodyyou’rehomenowpetmewalkmefeedmeohboyohboyohboy” dance.  Don’t put a dog treat on the new baby’s head.  Don’t let your cat walk all over the baby.  Don’t let your baby put a possible salmonella-tinged turtle in his mouth.  Don’t put your pet bunny in your newborn baby’s crib.  Straightforward, yes, but since people feel the need to reiterate these pearls of wisdom, obviously not everyone has the right amount of common sense.

The doctor tells us that a child raised in a home with pets is more comfortable and appropriate with animals, so that is a big plus.  Additionally, some of the tips provided in this video are pretty clever – like bringing a piece of clothing or (ew) a dirty diaper home before you bring the baby home.  That way pets know the baby’s smell already and won’t be overly curious when you bring the little one home.  A good video for new moms and dads, and for pet-owners, too.

Obviously, prevention is the first step, so a flea and tick repellent is a must-have for any dog that ever ventures outside.  Granted, outside dogs are more susceptible because, well, they’re outside more often and therefore exposed to more ticks, but even if you have a little dog that only gets walked and spends most of his time indoors, you should still worry about ticks.  They suck blood and can carry Lyme disease, which is no fun at all.

As the owner of two dogs who walk me, rather than letting me walk them, I found this information extremely helpful, but the delivery is a little strange. I guess Cindi has spent many years training dogs – an important component of dog training is repetition. This video is a little repetitious. That’s OK, though, because you get to see how she teaches a dog how to walk on a “loose leash.” In other words, how to get your dog NOT to pull on the leash like a madman.

The instruction is sound, and she makes some excellent suggestions. She also shows you how to integrate this dog training method with some others. One thing that was very nice was that she demonstrated the “loose leash” procedure with her personal dog, and then with a larger dog that hadn’t been trained previously. So it turns out, after all, that holding a treat on a stick in front of your dog is NOT the best way to get him to behave on a leash.
